Bike Porn Monday #7
Wow, another week has flown by and I find myself sitting here on a Sunday night compiling the seventh installment of weekly bike porn. Things are a little hectic, so apologies if this edition is a little light on…
Stylish Commuter
Quality Bicycle Products, the guys behind Surly, Salsa and other brands, launched the Civia brand of commuting bikes earlier this year. These are designed as high end commuter bikes with an emphasis on low/no maintenance (they use Shimano or Rohloff internally geared hubs).
Adam Slight’s Raleigh
Adam Slight (aslight (at) at.asdnet.com) restored this Raleigh bicycle as part of an art project. I think it’s gorgeously executed and I’m a real fan of the retro banding that he’s used:
Jonny Cycles
Jonny Cycles is another custom frame builder from the US who does some great work. Not only is the paintwork beautiful, but the lugwork is beautiful and finished to perfection:
The frames also feature lots of custom and highly unique metalwork:
Cunningham
Cunningham Cycles is a Canadian custom frame builder and they win points with me for a number of reasons. Firstly, they paint their bikes in really strong schemes and don’t just paint them white, red and black:
Secondly, they make a pink bike. Call me a girl, but there is something fantastic about bright pink bikes and canary yellow bikes. This frame is just beautiful:
THM Carbones
Yet another of a long line of German carbon, lightweight manufacturers, THM Carbones makes the very special (i.e. expensive!) Clavicula crankset:
In particular, I really like the more recent MTB version - I can just see this crankset with a single chainring in perhaps the ultimate single speed setup:
These cranksets are seriously impressive - weighing in at a mere 400g. Alos in the super lightweight category is the very elegant Scapula crankset that THM Carbones produces:
Storck TT Frameset
Whilst we’re with mad Germans - how about Storck? These guys are much loved by the weight-weenie crowd and I realy like their TT frameset:
Mathitech
What? Yes, I know, who on earth calls their bikes Mathitech? Well, a bunch of nerds who got into bike building. Would you believe these are Italian made and a pretty special blend of titanium and carbon. They make up for their stupid brand name with some great model names - here’s the “Dark Angel”:
Niner One9
Ok, I’m going to indulge myself. If you look under the reviews section of this site you’ll see a review of my new and absolutely gorgeous Niner One9 mountain bike. Here’s a pic or two of the bike to wet your appetite:
Gios - Pure Genius
And for something gratuitous this week - it’s hard to go past this shot from 2005 by Gios. Looks older than that as it’s got a retro feel. God bless the Italians!
