Improve your bike handling - ride a mountain bike…
A few weeks ago I rode the Angry Doctor - 100km of awesome offroad fun down on the NSW south east coast. About 70% of the 100km is single or double track that twists and turns through the terrain. Basically six and a half hours of continuous skill development.
When I got back on the roadie on the Monday morning for my usual commute to work, I noticed something quite remarkable - I felt very different on the bike and much more confident in terms of bike handling - in particularly descending and cornering.
One of the problems with trying to develop skills on a road bike is that a lot of road biking is non-technical. On an average 100km ride, there’s only a few km that have technical sections. By contrast, hitting some great single track gives the opportunity for a few hours of skill development. I’ve also found in particular that since I’ve been riding a rigid mountain bike this is especially true. The bike is less forgiving, but over time I’ve found much better in terms of skill development. The problem I find with suspension is it is too forgiving - meaning that skills are less important.
So, if you’re after a little skill development, grab a mountain bike and hit some technical trails.
