Oporto’s Burgers and Cycle Paths… Happy days…
Anyhow, at about 3.30p today - after what has been a hectic but productive day - I thought, what the hell and went out to buy myself some food of champions; an Oporto’s Bondi Burger, Chips and a can of Pepsi Light. From the office (on George Street), it’s a short walk over the Clarence Street to Oporto’s. As I walked across the King Street / Clarence Street intersection I saw the following sign posted against some construction fencing:
With burger’s beckoning, I stopped to read the good news that the construction of the King Street cycleway has commenced. For those unfamiliar with the project, this is a significant step forward for the City of Sydney. Whilst the cycleway itself is pretty short (it’s only two blocks long!) it is significant because it is a proper cycle lane - not some token picture of a bicycle painted on the road like so many bicycle lane projects of the past. The planned cycle path is shown below”
Having spent some time researching cycling infrastructure as it exists in other cities, and more recently riding some of our recently implemented cycling infrastructure, I’m a firm believer in separated cycle paths. Whilst it is cheaper and easier for road builders to integrate a cycle path with the existing or planned road surface, from a commuter point of view a separated path is so much friendlier and safer. Ultimately, if we want people to take up cycling as a means of commuting we need to provide infrastructure which not only is safe, but will be perceived to be safe. Separate bike paths are the way to go.
But what about the Burgers?
Well, after the momentary distraction, I did find my way across to Oporto’s. The bright lights beckoned:
And this lovely lady was just waiting to serve:
The good thing about getting a burger mid afternoon is that there are no queues, the chips are made fresh as is the burger. I’m sure I didn’t need it, but man it was tasty…

Greg, I went past this on the weekend. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the pavement looks like normal and the fencing is gone. I thought they were improving it but i’m near certain it was just fixing the pavement. I will check again tonight on my way home.
