TDF09 – Stage 17 Preview

Stage 17 : Bourg-Saint-Maurice > Le Grand-Bornand – 169km
This is a very tough day arguably the hardest stage of the tour with four cat 1 climbs and a cat 2.
Very much a climbers stage
The final 2 climbs are tough ones not all that long at 8km but both are over an 8% average [...]

Improbable Performances – is Contador clean??

I’ve written on a number of occasions about improbable performances (eg this article) and the link back to doping.  The basic view I take is that it’s just not really possible for someone to come out and ride the legs off the rest of the peleton without an unfair advantage.  Last year probably one of [...]

TDF09 – Stage 16 Preview

Stage 16 : Martigny > Bourg-Saint-Maurice – 159km
This is a pretty tough day, even more so after yesterdays rest day. The day after a rest day is always said to be fairly tough on the body.
There are two big Mountains to cross with the finish right after the descent off the second mountain.
It [...]

Back to the hills where the race should start to be a little more lively.
A number of good climbs, in particular the 2 main climbs in the last half of the stage.
A cat 1 followed by a cat 2 which the summit is only 20km from the [...]

TDF : Stage 12 Preview

Stage 12 : Tonnerre > Vittel – 211km
Another of the similar stages as per the last two days.
Plenty of rolling hills with five cat 4 climbs and a cat 3. Enough to wear out some legs.
It should also favour a good breakaway ride, whether the break can hold on is another story.
The final catagorised [...]

TDF09 : Stage 11 Preview

Stage 11 : Vatan > Saint-Fargeau – 192km
A fairly similar type of stage as yesterdays.
Small rolling hills with two cat 4 climbs. Nothing to break up the peloton.
Standard sprint stage again, with a break of 3 or 4 riders who’ll get mowed down in the final few kilometres.
Unless the sprint teams don’t work or [...]

TDF09 : Stage 6 Preview

Stage 6 : Girona > Barcelona 181km
I blew last night nights prediction, who would have thought the break (or remnants of) would survive the chase (or lack thereof as it turned out).
Stage 6 takes a visit to Spain, that could encourage Spanish riders to get themselves into the break.
There are 5 catagorised climbs [...]

    • Dr Sludge - farking brilliant puncture protection...

Pfschttt… Is there any more depressing sound – or feeling – of a tyre going flat from rolling over some bit of road debris.  Nothing interrupts a good ride than having to fix a flat, and why oh why do they always seem to occur right when you’re running late on your way to work??

    • NiteRider MiNewt.X2 - the sweet spot for bike lighting
The NiteRider MiNewt.X2 is a compact, high powered LED light that runs off a rechargeable Li-Ion battery pack. There are a few standouts with this light that out of the box will have you impressed. Firstly, the quality of the finish - this is a very well made light that has been well designed and thought through. Secondly, it's a very compact unit - the headlight itself is very small which makes it easy to find a place on your bars for it to live and the battery pack is nice and compact with a well designed velcro fastener.
    • Pedros Tyre Levers - my new faves
With nicely rounded corners and a very fat body, these levers set a new standard. Zero flex, no sharp bits and a good feel in the hand, I was surprised at how easily these levers prised my Conti tyres off. Two very big thumbs up.

This is a great bike, and if you commute and have never ridden a bike purpose set up for commuting, I'd encourage you to try it.
    • Electronic Dura-ace - in the flesh, and surprisingly good...
When it comes to electronic groupsets, I've thought "why bother" simply because I don't see how an electronic system is going to be singificantly better than a mechanical system. I was wrong.
