Track Racing – bruised lungs and getting schooled…

If you’re a trackie and living anywhere in or around Sydney, you’d have known that last night kicked off the start of the 2009 series of Race All Winter (RAW).
After making my ‘debut’ track racing last year I was itching to get out there again this year and enjoy the rough and tumble smash fest [...]

Race All Winter – Track Racing is Back…

Well, Summer has come and gone and autumn is more than half way gone… Which means one thing in my cycling world – winter track racing is almost here…
The Madman
If you’ve read any of my posts from last season you’ll know that I’ve raved about the enthusiasm of the bloke who puts on the track [...]

Jayson Austin breaks masters world hour record…

Yesterday for a bit of fun, and because I want to indoctrinate my children from a very early age, I packed the family in the Odyssey (yep, sexy me I drive a people mover) and we headed south to the Dunc Gray Velodrome.
Why?  Well, Jayson Austin was having another crack at breaking the masters world [...]

Leaving skin on the track – a lesson in track-craft

I was a very lazy child.  With a relatively large blessing of natural talent in terms of intellect and athletic capability, I tended to make excuses rather than apply myself.  Laziness turned to avoidance and I remember long periods of time off school with faked illness (I even ended up in hospital when I was [...]

Track Racing – finding a niche

Last night marked the fourth outing for me to the Dunc Gray Velodrome for the Race All Winter track series.  On average I’m getting there every two weeks – if I had nothing else to do I reckon I’d be there every week.  A couple of friends from triathlon – Alex and Tamara – came [...]

Happy days : bleeding lungs and a bit of biffo…

Friday is always a good day – the week is closing out and the weekend draws near.  Friday is an even better day when it’s a lead up to going track racing.  Like a teenager looking forward to seeing the girl he’s trying to get it on with, I spent most of the day with [...]

Burning quads, lactic acid and baltic pine…

It’s Friday night again and the stars aligned to allow me to head out to the Dunc Gray Velodrome again for another night of the Race All Winter track series.  Tonight was my second outing for track racing – if you missed the first installment, the report from the kid in the candy store can [...]

    • Dr Sludge - farking brilliant puncture protection...

Pfschttt… Is there any more depressing sound – or feeling – of a tyre going flat from rolling over some bit of road debris.  Nothing interrupts a good ride than having to fix a flat, and why oh why do they always seem to occur right when you’re running late on your way to work??

    • NiteRider MiNewt.X2 - the sweet spot for bike lighting
The NiteRider MiNewt.X2 is a compact, high powered LED light that runs off a rechargeable Li-Ion battery pack. There are a few standouts with this light that out of the box will have you impressed. Firstly, the quality of the finish - this is a very well made light that has been well designed and thought through. Secondly, it's a very compact unit - the headlight itself is very small which makes it easy to find a place on your bars for it to live and the battery pack is nice and compact with a well designed velcro fastener.
    • Pedros Tyre Levers - my new faves
With nicely rounded corners and a very fat body, these levers set a new standard. Zero flex, no sharp bits and a good feel in the hand, I was surprised at how easily these levers prised my Conti tyres off. Two very big thumbs up.
    • Felt X-City - hassle free commuting...
This is a great bike, and if you commute and have never ridden a bike purpose set up for commuting, I'd encourage you to try it.
    • Electronic Dura-ace - in the flesh, and surprisingly good...
When it comes to electronic groupsets, I've thought "why bother" simply because I don't see how an electronic system is going to be singificantly better than a mechanical system. I was wrong.
    • Carnosine / Beta-alanine supplementation...
Looking for an endurance boost? Carnosine may be the answer...
    • Mother Energy Drink - nothing like the old one, exactly like Red Bull...
Tastes like Red Bull, but much cheaper...
